Abstract :
A new approach for detection of ultra-wideband pulses based on a flip-flop circuit is proposed in this paper. A functional sample of the pulse detector was designed, manufactured and measured. The detector is able to detect a pulse 335 ps wide with a pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of at least 10 MHz, whereas a minimum detectable signal level is approximately 230 mV. The circuit draws a quiescent current of 1.8 mA from a single 3.6 V source and is therefore suitable for battery-powered devices. The designed pulse detector is sensitive only to the input signal level regardless of the pulse shape, which is particularly advantageous in severe multipath conditions.
