Summary form only given. Erbium-lasers emitting in the wavelength range of the peak water absorption around 3 /spl mu/m are of main interest for medical applications. Commercial available are flashlamp-pumped systems but it would be favourable to use diode-pumped systems which are more compact and efficient.
