Abstract
Summary form only given. In an attempt to reduce cost and tap onto the well-established silicon technology, sol-gel derived integrated optical components on SOS (silica-on-silicon) have attracted attention recently. While rare earth doping in these components has been attempted, no net optical amplification has so far been demonstrated due partially to the relatively low gain achieved. In this paper, we report sol-gel Er/sup 3+/,Yb/sup 3+/:SiO/sub 2/-TiO/sub 2/-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ planar waveguides on SOS. A stronger fluorescence at 1.55 /spl mu/m has been achieved with Yb/sup 3+/ co-doping.
