Abstract
An important issue associated with employing vector quantization (VQ) for image coding is that of reliability regarding the actual performance in the presence of channel noise. This paper presents a novel, approach to addressing such issues. The novelty of the proposed approach is that it renders much better reconstruction image quality with greatly reduced complexity, comparing to existing schemes. The proposed approach takes advantages of the spatial contiguity property of images, instead of treating the transmitted data as general information data like many other joint source-channel coding schemes do
