Abstract :
When the ratio of bandwidth to data-rate is large, the pulsed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (pulsed-OFDM) modulation can efficiently suppress fading by exploiting multipath diversity and thus achieve a good performance for ultra-wideband (UWB) communications. In order to obtain higher data-rate with limited bandwidth, a pulsed multicarrier time division multiplexing (pulsed-MCTDM) structure, a combination of TDM schemes and pulsed-OFDM modulations, is proposed in this paper. It boosts the data-rate by transmitting multiple pulsed-OFDM streams in parallel and distinguishes different streams by chip-level time slots. By multi-stream transmission, multi-branch receiving and parallel processing, it is able to provide higher scalability in data-rate and more flexibility in system design and reconfiguration than the original pulsed-OFDM system. The theoretical analysis demonstrates that the new structure does not decrease the available multipath diversity order while scaling the data-rate.
