Abstract :
The National Ocean Service (NOS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), operates a fleet of small boats and ocean-going ships to gather hydrographic data. Present computers used in gathering these data are obsolete, NOS is planning to replace these computers with the new Shipboard Data System III (SDS III). SDS III will use state of the art computer systems to further automate the hydrographic surveying process, to provide improved information on the completeness and accuracy of a survey, and to allow significantly increased field processing of the data.
