Abstract :
Summary form only given. We have recently demonstrated order-of-magnitude emission lifetime (quantum yield) improvements in several Pr-doped chlorides. Dy3+ doped sulfide glasses have recently been proposed as 1300-nm amplifiers. Pr3+ ions are difficult to pump directly but Dy3+ possesses several strong candidate pump transitions. Spectroscopic characterization of various Dy3+-doped chlorides showed that several possess useful 1300-nm emission bands, and absorption and emission spectra of Dy3+:LaCl3 are shown.
