Abstract
Summary form only given. In this paper, a simple model is proposed to compute SNR penalties for any given set of launched powers. The model requires only knowledge of the total gain of the optical fiber amplifier chain for each channel. For optimally pre-emphasised WDM systems, in which all channels have the same SNR at the receiver, the model allows computation of both the SNR penalty and the optimal launched powers by solving a simple eigenvalue/ eigenvector problem.
