Abstract :
Two methods to perform multiresolution transmission of HDTV (high-definition television) through subband coding are compared. A simple compression technique is frame-by-frame encoding of the spatial subbands of the video. The authors have used the subband decomposition in hierarchical estimation of the motion in the video as well as in encoding the error in a progressive transmission system. One can use either pel recursion or block matching for the motion estimation in a 2D QMF pyramid. By simulating on a test sequence, the authors obtained a gain of 2 dB using motion compensation over frame-by-frame coding
