Abstract :
The author gives results on optical fiber component reliability obtained from a multilayer field trial and from the first volume deployment in France. The field trial led to improved definition, characterization, and qualification of the different components, and yielded quantitative reliability data. This experience helped in the design of optical transmission systems and future FTTC (fiber-to-the-customer) planning. Early reliability information has also been obtained from analysis of components that failed since the beginning of volume deployment
