Abstract :
The authors propose an optical fiber loop transmission system for narrowband telecommunications services combined with a switched broadband digital access for enhanced video and data services. The narrowband telecommunications services could be transmitted in the 1300-nm optical window using a passive optical network (PON) architecture. The switched broadband digital access is wavelength division multiplexed onto the narrowband network using the 1550-nm window or integrated with the narrowband network in the 1300-nm window. The switched broadband digital access takes advantage of low bit rate (~6 Mb/s) entertainment quality video encoding in order to provide enhanced video services such as premium entertainment video, educational television, and video telephony. Enhanced data service such as SMDS and switched DS-1 can be provided using this architecture
