Abstract
The authors highlight some major strategic considerations related to the planning of fiber-optic-based local loop networks for the delivery of broadband interactive services to residential users. The work is aimed at providing an engineering and financial framework for assessing the likely evolutionary scenario to multiservice cable TV networks. By focusing on the key factors of consumer demand, technology, and economics, the authors present a techno-economic analysis of the most promising systems suitable for multiservice cable TV distribution networks being planned today and based on FTTC (fiber to the curb), FATTH (fiber almost to the home), and FTTH (fiber to the home) architectures
