Abstract :
Potential applications of very-high-speed data networks are discussed. Those under study in the VISTAnet gigabit testbed are emphasized. It is concluded that the early demand for very-high-speed networks will likely come from interactive imaging applications as typified by the interactive 3D medical imaging application planned for VISTAnet. To become a catalyst for such applications, these networks should be designed as public networks, allowing high-speed communications between any parties wishing to communicate
