Abstract :
This paper describes melt layer erosion experiments at North Carolina State University. Experiments are conducted using the electrothermal plasma gun PIPE. Results for aluminum (2042 Al) and stainless steel (316 SS) samples are discussed. Discharge energies are between 0.06 and 2.43 kJ. The sample absorbed fluence ranges between 92 and 634 kJ/m2. Samples are bisected following exposure to reveal the thickness of the resolidified material. A thickness of resolidified material on an aluminum sample in excess of 10 μm is observed
