Abstract :
Summary form only given. The European Community is undertaking a major effort in research and development of advanced communications technologies including fiber-optic communication for integrated broadband networks. In recognition of the vital importance of effective communication services to Europe´s economic and social development, the European Economic Community has launched a joint effort, the Research and Development in Advanced Communications Technologies in Europe, or RACE, program. Implementation possibilities and key component technologies are researched in a concerted effort. Systems-oriented projects address broadband local networks and customer access connections. Options include direct digital modulation formats, high-bit-rate connections, wavelength division and subcarrier multiplexing as well as coherent techniques. Flanking efforts cover active and passive components
