Abstract
We propose an adaptive automatic repeat request (ARQ) scheme using pragmatic trellis-coded modulations (TCMs) and soft-decision Viterbi decoding. The scheme adapts to the changing channel noise condition by selecting the TCM with a code rate which best matches the current channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). A simple and yet efficient algorithm for estimating channel SNR is also proposed
