  • Abstract
A volumetric display with true depth has been studied in this paper. It is based on a swept volume technique, generating an array of voxels within a space swept out by a rotating-screen. with the help of the advanced digital light processing technique, 2-D slice images of the 3-D model are projected in rapid succession onto a helical screen spinning at a sufficiently high speed, because of the persistence of vision, the viewers´ eyes integrates them into a 3-D spatial image. We have demonstrated the feasibility of our system by building a compact and modular prototype, images can consist of up to 100 millions voxels at a refresh rate of 20 Hz, and it can be viewed directly by any number of viewers from almost any direction, just as if the real 3-D objects were floating there.
