Abstract :
Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) has been chosen by the CCITT as the implementation technique for the broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN). ATM allows to transport in a common manner voice, data and video. Each of these services has differing quality of service (QoS) requirements. Fixed length cells are assigned to virtual connections on a as needed basis. The bandwidth efficiency of ATM comes at the risk of cell delay and loss. So ATM congestion management, by bandwidth enforcement or policing, is required to maintain the connection´s quality of service. The leaky bucket is one possible policing method, Several variations of this technique have been proposed. This paper is concerned with dimensioning and performance evaluation of a policing function in ATM networks. We present a modified version of the leaky bucket algorithm. Under the assumption of video traffic, parameters of the policing method have been dimensioned in order to demonstrate its efficiency
