Abstract :
Research on the fate and effects of organotins started in the mid 1970´s in Scandinavia. A number of laboratory studies and some field monitoring have since then been carried out. High concentrations of triorganotins have been found in the sound between Denmark and Sweden. Also, a study of the concentrations of organotins in biota from Swedish coastal waters, showed the presence of di- and tributyltins in herring and blue mussels from all studied areas. Present research is mainly oriented towards field studies. The Governments of Denmark, Norway and Sweden are in the process of regulating the use of organotins in shipbottom paints. It is not clear yet what kind of restrictions that are planned. Furthermore it is possible that a recommendation on some kind of joint action will be made by the contracting parties of the Helsinki (Baltic Sea) Convention.
