Abstract :
A finite element model of a SPT write head, recording medium and soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) is used to calculate the magnetic fields in the recording layer. Discrete tracks were formed only in the mesh of the recording layer, with the permeabilities of the land and grooves set to two and one respectively. The recording layer thickness was 13 nm and the average size of grains in the recording layer was 6 nm with a standard deviation of 12.5%. The anisotropy field of the recording layer, Hk, was varied to maximise the SNR. Readback waveforms were calculated from reciprocity, using the sensitivity function of a 60 nm wide MR head with a shield to shield spacing of 30 nm.
