Abstract :
The National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) has taken delivery of a recently developed Local User Terminal (LUT) for use with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite Data Collection and Platform Location System. Tests were conducted in which the accuracy of the LUT position fixes were compared with those produced by Service Argos to determine if the LUT could be used for a moored buoy application. Analysis of intial test results and discussions with the manufacturer produced techniques for improved operation. These techniques were implemented and the results are presented and compared with those from the original test and from Service Argos. Additional modifications to provide possible improved position accuracy and system performance are also described.
