Summary form only given. All-solid state and compact tunable UV laser sources based on Ce-doped crystals have already proved their advantages, in terms of efficiency and beam quality. Two Ce-doped laser crystals were particularly addressed in the present work: Ce,Na:LiSrAlF/sub 6/ (LiSAF) and Ce:LiLuF/sub 4/ (LiLuF). The former was grown with Ce/sup 3+/ and Na/sup +/ dopant concentrations of about 0.25%. There was a /spl Pi/ polarization absorption coefficient at 266 nm (the wavelength of the frequency-quadrupled Nd:YAG pump laser).
