Abstract :
Summary form only given. Plastic optical fibre (POF) for short distance data communication is attracting interest due to ease-of-alignment and installation. Emitters around 650 nm are required due to a minimum in transmission loss at this wavelength. Resonant-cavity LEDs (RCLEDs) at 650 nm have been used for 500 Mbps transmission but at higher speeds lasers will be required, with vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) being the preferred choice. This paper presents DC and large signal modulation results on 670 nm oxidised VCSEL, packaged in TO-46 package.
