  • Abstract
Summary form only. We present an analysis of quantum cascade laser (QCL) structures incorporating metallized surface-relief gratings. The numerical approach is based on a rigorous Floquet-Bloch theory allowing an accurate description of the electromagnetic field in these waveguide structures with "strong" gratings. Starting from rigorously computed on-resonant Floquet-Bloch solutions a coupled-mode theory has been derived, combining both a high degree of accuracy and versatility for the modeling of first-order and second-order surface-emitting distributed-feedback (DFB) QCLs.
