Abstract :
The magnetostriction and magnetisation of Hiperco 50 soft magnetic material composed of 49wt%Fe, 49%Co, and 2%V are measured simultaneously using an optical technique with a pickup coil. A butterfly shape is observed in the magnetostrictive strain vs. applied field curve at room temperature. This suggests that the alloy has a very low coercive field which is confirmed by the DC hysteresis loop. Magnetostrictive strain vs. magnetisation plot shows a parabolic shape at room temperature and up to about 500degC which changes radically so that significant strain occurs only near magnetic saturation.
