Abstract
This paper proposes a novel doubly salient hybrid excited (DSHE) machine with a special magnetic bridge, which not only reduces the need of permanent magnet (PM) material and field winding MMF, but also offers the ability of the true field weakening. The DSHE motor consists of two types of stator windings: a 3-phase armature winding and a dc excited winding. The dc field winding works not only as an electromagnet but also as a tool for flux weakening and/or efficiency optimization.
