Abstract
A low-cost novel antenna design for metallic objects is proposed in this paper. The antenna, composed of a feeding loop, two radiation patches printed on a lossy substrate FR-4 and a ground plane, does not have shorting pins or walls. The proposed antenna has a very broad bandwidth, from 657MHz to 1.25GHz, which covers about 590MHz. According to the simulated results, the theoretical maximum reading range of the proposed antenna is 5.06m to 5.69m mounted on different metal plates or in free air when the maximum effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) of the reader is 4w.
