Abstract :
The great interest in the implementation of local radio networks for indoor communications has stimulated much research activity. The idle signal multiple access (ISMA) system is known to obtain high throughput in the situation where a number of terminals transmit data packets to a base station over a common radio channel. In the system, the base station broadcasts signals which inform all the terminals of the idle or busy channel status. Each terminal is allowed to transmit a packet only when it receives an idle signal. However, the capture effect and the propagation delay cause an unfairness of the local throughput depending on the distance from the base station. We propose the ISMA which broadcasts multiple idle signals to decrease the unfairness of the local throughput without power control. The performance of the local throughput and total throughput are analyzed. It is shown that the unfairness of the local throughput due to the distance decreases without reducing the total throughput
