Abstract

The paper expounds the expressing format of SNMP PDU and the rule of BER encoding, gives an example of the coding of GetRequest PDU, and advances one effective way of searching the SNMP agent: first utilize the rule of BER coding to encode the GetRequest PDU to be transmitted in the SNMP management station with reference to the format of SNMP PDU, then encapsulate it into UDP packet and transmit it in the form of broadcast. All the SNMP agents in the same LAN make response to the GetRequest PDU, namely, to transmit GetResponse PDU in the form of unicast. Because the GetResponse PDU is also encapsulated in UDP packet, the IP address of the SNMP agent can be extracted from the response packet at last.
