Abstract :
We show here that the polarization instability results in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) degradation and the appearance of bit error-rate (BER) floors in polarization-sensitive optical links. This limits performance of vertical cavity surface emitting laser [VCSEL-based] free-space optical interconnects to data rates significantly lower than the laser modulation bandwith. In conclusion, our experiments suggest that in the absence of polarization stability, data transmission rates in polarization-sensitive links based on VCSELs will be limited to -300 Mb/s
