Abstract :
The next generation Internet architecture requires mobile communication devices to have continuous Internet protocol version 6 (IPv6) network connectivity in wireless environments. The IETF mobile IPv6 standard is the protocol designed to support seamless mobility. Mobile IPv6 performance analysis and optimization are active areas of research for peer to peer (P2P) voice and video applications over IPv6. This paper surveys and evaluates the Mobile IPv6 implementations available today. A native mobile IPv6 testbed network was designed and configured using the MIPL implementation. Various experiments were conducted to determine handoff latency, data throughput, round trip time (RTT) and packet loss. The testbed network experiments also identify the current implementation limitations and inefficiencies. In this paper we suggest possible improvements to the current MIPL implementation.
