Abstract :
The path multiplexing architecture for optical subscriber systems that are constructed with synchronous transfer mode (STM) techniques is discussed. A novel concept, the virtual sub-container (VSC), is proposed to realize multiple network access. The VSC multiplexing method will make it possible to offer various services flexibly and inexpensively. Configuration of the digital service unit (DSU) based on VSC and the user network interface, and ideas for operation, administration, and maintenance are shown. The necessity of considering the introduction of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is also discussed
