Abstract :
SONET (synchronous optical network) has been introduced by several vendors. Three aspects of SONET are examined: the structure of the signal, equipment building blocks, and the impacts on the existing network and network design. One of the major breakthroughs of SONET is the ability to provide add/drop functionality. Comments on the improvement in networks using add/drop instead of asynchronous solutions are provided. Some insight into how to use add/drops is included, along with a view to the future of SONET equipment in the network
