Abstract
The optimal and asymptotically optimal noncoherent sequential receiver structures for time dispersive and/or unequally apportioned channels have been derived for trellis-coded PSK signals. Their performance has been assessed with the use of upper bounds, and the results have demonstrated considerable superiority over the conventional systems (as high as 4.5 dB at a bit error rate of 10-4). The derived bound expressions include the effects of intersymbol interference, noise correlation, and fading
