Abstract
Discusses the historical evolution of frequency control in radio communications. The author begins by considering the requirement of frequency control, and then goes on to consider phase noise, oscillators, the variable frequency oscillator, oscillators using quartz, the mixer synthesiser, the PLL frequency synthesiser and direct digital synthesis
