Abstract :
This paper proposes that Internet technology today will have far reaching effects on HDTV and other digital broadcast technologies of the future. The paper begins by highlighting the enthusiasm with which North American broadcasters have embraced Internet video streaming products. The value of this technology lies not with its low-quality image resolution, but with a characteristic common to all digital broadcasts-the potential for interactivity. To capitalize on this advantage, software companies are coming out with new and better searching tools that allow users to receive news on demand, when and where they want it. The authors believe that these technologies are laying the groundwork for the introduction of this value-added service to broadcasters who will offer higher quality digital services in the years to come
