Abstract :
Many new services come into reach with the availability of high bandwidth satellite channels and cable networks. In order to use the full potential of these channels, powerful local data storage is needed. With such storage capabilities features like real video-on-demand, multiple channel recording and playback, sophisticated Internet services, personalised video, and transmission channel optimisation become a reality. Requirements are: MPEG-2 quality, high capacity, compact form factor, low access time and a fair price. It becomes even more interesting if such devices can offer additional functionality in a computer environment. Magnetic tape storage products can do this all and more. This paper describes storage requirements in multimedia and broadcasting environments, applications as well as magnetic tape storage device technologies and products
