Abstract
The paper focuses on the design of a computer based system for supporting executive decision making, beyond the mere retrieval and processing of data and information. We examine the extent to which, by using the hyperknowledge framework for decision support systems, executive support systems can be made to emulate human perceptual and judgmental processes. Based on an appreciation of the cognitive processes involved in strategic decision making from extant research, we show how the hyperknowledge framework can provide a basis for the design of generalized executive support systems that would help overcome the cognitive limitations of an executive and lead to improved decision processes. Our research provides a new basis for achieving a prescriptive mapping between human decision making processes and the design of executive support systems for strategic management
