    This paper considers strategic management first from the perspective of what it is not and then suggests the framework of gap analysis, the extended Ansoff matrix (1957) and integrative model of the strategic planning process. The specific skills that the engineer and technologist brings to this process is highlighted with the much neglected but critical issue of strategy implementation
