Abstract
The paper outlines the recent changes to the specification of what is now called the serial data transport (SDT) as detailed in the proposed SMPTE document. The serial digital data interface (SDDI) is a fully compliant implementation of the SDT. Where the SDT specification provides the information for the ISO network and transport layers, SDDI includes these layers and adds the next two layers; session and presentation. Like all high data rate links, the SDT standard has point to point connections, but the addressing structure provides features for data networking and it is this aspect on which this paper focuses. The ability to include a network address does not itself imply that the link is a network. A reliable and error free network connection implies bandwidth reservation and secure connections, and the paper deals with the principles behind these topics. SDDI is currently applied only as a point-to-point connection but is network capable should the need and application arise. The change to a network will require a clear user strategy as well as the associated support equipment of which routing equipment, control software and the transmission and receiving terminals are key components
