Abstract
The initial range of inductive output tube (IOT) UHF TV amplifier systems has been accepted world-wide as an important step forward in TV amplifier technology. Lower power amplifiers have been developed, but a higher power IOT system is needed to satisfy requirements in Europe and elsewhere. The paper discusses the need for a higher power IOT system and describes the development of a 55 kW visual plus 5.5 kW aural common amplifier system, based upon the successful lower power design. Changes necessary to increase the output power, whilst maintaining the established reliability and life potential, are described. Analogue performance results for the new IOT are presented. The future of terrestrial TV is digital television. The paper also presents the results of a programme of experimental work aimed at establishing the OFDM DVB performance of the new IOT and its possible impact on the world digital scene is discussed
