Abstract :
Next generation wireless networks will converge at an IP-based infrastructure that will support different wireless technologies hence enabling pervasive network access. Mobility management in this heterogeneous environment is an important issue that needs to effectively facilitate the seamless integration of the different networks by supporting smooth and secure handover among them. Yet, as a mobile node changes points of attachment during handover in the converged network, it encounters various interruptions to active connections due to handover delays that result in packet losses hence defeating the purpose of seamless and secure integration aimed at providing seamless session continuity. In this paper, we propose a novel coordinated integration of HIP and PMIPv6 mobility management protocols to provide secure mobility and efficient handover with negligible handover latency among heterogeneous wireless networks in a localized mobility environment. We present the architectural elements of the framework and show through discussion and analysis that the scheme is secure and results in negligible handover delay and packet losses.
