Abstract :
Why is DRM important to the BBC? There are three simple reasons for this, each of which becomes even more important when we´re talking about the digital world - be it broadcasting or broadband. The first point is one of ownership. The rights structure of much of our content is incredibly complex. We quite often buy-in rights, for sports or for feature films. Sometimes our production partners and talent retain certain rights when we commission a programme and quite often we only have rights to broadcast certain content a certain number of times. In addition to this, we might have co-production partners involved in a production which means that we share the rights of content, often based upon territories. The next point is legality. All of the above are usually legally enforced in the form of a contract
