Abstract :
Artificial neural networks are accepted as alternative tools for solving problems in technical environments. But there is still a striking discrepancy between laboratory prototypes and real world applications. To overcome this situation the idea of system efficiency is introduced and it is shown that neural components can improve efficiency. Requirements for neural development systems are deduced and an extended pattern definition is presented. Finally an OCR application illustrates the conceptional idea.
