Abstract
The advantages of applying the virtual path (VP) concept to asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks are summarized. The implementation techniques of VPs with ATM cross-connect systems and some VP applications are presented. It is demonstrated that network capability can be effectively increased by applying VP techniques
