Abstract :
This paper introduces the automatic train coupling system that has been developed by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). This system automatically docks a preceding train with a following one without worker operation. By using this system, JR East has been operating the transport capacity optimally by lengthen or shorten train arrangement on Shinkansen lines. For an automatic train coupling with various length trains, it is necessary to detect the tail position of a preceding train accurately. This system uses train detecting equipment with loop coils. These are more suitable for position detection than any other systems such as using truck circuit and axle counter. The system has been used in some stations on Tohoku Shinkansen lines
