Abstract
Video services will assume always greater relevance in the scenario of broadband networks (B-ISDN). The high compression rates used to reduce the bit rate of these signals makes them highly sensitive to information loss and distortion during transmission. In a multiservice environment it may also be possible that the network cannot support the bit rate actually required. In the paper, the authors provide results obtained by applying an adaptive coding scheme to match the source bit rate to the actual throughput provided by an ATM network. A “real” environment has been simulated with images transmitted through a Batcher-Banyan switching network
