Title :
Developments in optical amplifier technology and systems
Author_Institution :

Abstract :
The characteristics of semiconductor and fiber amplifiers and recent system experiments and their results are reviewed. The performance of low-polarization (and multi-quantum-well) semiconductor amplifiers and semiconductor pumped erbium fiber amplifiers is discussed. The use of optical amplifiers to realize practical nonlinear transmission which will allow the multigigabit transmission of data over large distances without dispersion is also discussed
