Abstract :
We assess for the first time the performance of a clock recovery scheme when the input data is affected by signal jitter, corresponding to random deviations of the digital pulse positions, which can be encountered in high speed optical digital systems. An analytic expression for the RMS jitter on the recovered clock is obtained as function of the system parameters and the signal jitter characteristic function. Theoretical results show that signal jitter can degrade significantly the clock recovery performance. This leads to careful re-optimisation of the timing extraction operation to accommodate appropriately this impairment
