Abstract
MAN interconnection is an important application on the high-speed networks. A novel architecture called the DQDB switch, which utilizes an ATM switch to interconnect several DQDB subnetworks, is proposed. Inside the DQDB switch, a cell scheduling algorithm is designed to balance the bandwidth between the forward and the backward buses. The system performance is evaluated and verified by simulation. The result of adopting this approach is the higher throughput and the lower MAC delay on each DQDB station, as compared to the system where all stations are interconnected by a single DQDB subnetwork. With this architecture, the service of the DQDB-ATM internetworking can be easily and naturally provided
